May 7: Apple Brown Betty

Why isn’t it apple cobbler? Why does apple get its own name? Oat and flour crumb top brown sugar with apples chunked and cooked down with cinnamon nutmeg cloves sugar. Apples are cheap, forgiving in the oven, and complementary with many flavors. If my mom made dessert not from a box, this was it.

  1. This sounds like apple crisp or apple crumble here. It was a staple at home growing up. (We never had anything from a box - the boxes weren't available in NZ in the 60s and 70s). I still love it.

  2. We called that an apple crisp also. The cobbler would have been apples topped by sweet spoon biscuits -- which my father's family called a distinctly unattractive name: apple grunt.

  3. Interesting, I never thought about the name. I assumed they were different.

  4. In my experience, Apple Brown Betty is quite different from the other apple desserts. It was my husband's favorite, served with hard sauce.
