Every mouse is Mrs. Frisby scurrying through
my garden plot stealing what she may find in
my lazy pruning and harvesting heading home
to the cinderblock to her sick child
to her overwhelming concerns to her lack of self
in the face of insurmountable odds against her
and I know
no rats of NIMH are going to help this one
So go and be swift.
Great last line. You know how to end a poem masterfully.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're really great at the beginning and middle parts too.
ReplyDeleteomg you guys stop.
ReplyDeleteI do like this month.
It's a treat to read you. Maybe I'll steal what I find in
Deleteyour lazy pruning.
Hanging my head in shame because I had to look up Mrs. Frisby and the rats (I'm tellin' ya, the lowbrow of the group), but now I get this poem fully, and I'm so glad I do.
ReplyDeleteSusan, after your poems, I'm the lowbrow of the group. Because now I'm going to look up Mrs. Frisby and the rats!
DeleteOh my goodness I don't know why I thought that book was more universal! I read it in grade school as did my kids...
ReplyDeleteP.S. I've never read it either. Didn't detract.
