My parents left me and my brother Ian alone for the week, looking for houses before the move. I was in 9th grade and he in 5th. I put the oil in the pan, on high. Popcorn was nostalgic and this was pre-microwave. I knew something was wrong before I turned around and saw the fire.

ReplyDeleteOh! Dean started a popcorn oil fire once in Wisconsin when we were staying at my parent's lake house. Idiot picked up the pan and carried it to the front door and threw it out into the snow. Andrew was crawling on the floor in his path. I still have nightmares of what could have happened if he dropped it on the baby.

ReplyDeleteThe oil was self limiting and luckily nothing else in the kitchen caught. I called 911 from across the street, and the firemen came and blew the smoke out of the house with a giant fan. The knobs did melt on the stove...but no baby in harm's way!
